What to do in Tenerife ♡

Last June my boyfriend and I had the opportunity to visit one of the beautiful Canary Islands of Spain, Tenerife. I had the idea to write a blog post with some recommendations on what to visit and do on the island based on our best experiences.

I hope this blog post will inspire you to visit the island or give you some ideas for your upcoming trip.

Happy reading ♡

1. Los Gigantes

Located on the western coast you find the impressive Los Gigantes Cliffs. These cliffs are really huge and way more impressive in real life than online pictures! A real treat for the eyes.

For those interested, these cliffs have been formed from lava flows. They are between 500 and 800 meters above sea level and 30 under.

Near the cliffs there is also a beach! However, due to the fact that there are a lot of loose rocks, it has become really dangerous to visit. So sadly they have closed a big part of the beach. That is why we did not really enjoy this beach. Is quite small...it gets very crowded and you hardly have any personal space.

2. Masca

Located north-east you find a small village named Masca. The road there is absolutely breathtaking. The town is surrounded by green nature and beautiful palm trees. You can take a cute walking path to the village that ends with the view on the famous Masca cliff.

The road there has lots of curves though. So be prepared if you get easily car sick haha. Also, don't make the mistake of going home in the dark. We did that and I experienced it as hell. It gets super dark and they don't have streetlights on the road. Very scary driving. If you want to use your high beam lights you have to switch them on and off every 5 seconds because you get lots of oncoming traffic on this road.

3. Bollullo Beach

Located on the northern coast. This beach is amazing if you are looking for some big waves! The road to it is beautiful with palm trees and banana plantations.

Be careful with swimming though! There is no lifeguard. If you don't have much experience I recommend you just sit on the beach and watch the waves instead of trying to defeat them haha. They are extremely strong and they take you out in no time. They can also take some big rocks with them which can hit you pretty bad.

However, this beach is not a piece of cake to reach. You have to drive to a restaurant to park and then walk a lot of stairs to reach it. But that is not the problem. The problem is that the end road is one way. So if you have oncoming traffic at the wrong time you are screwed... You only have a few option in some turns to let oncoming traffic pass. One of you will have to drive back to these points to let the other one pass.

Nevertheless, it was worth it!! We really enjoyed this beach. A stunning natural wonder.

4. El Teide National Park

Located at the centre of the island. Our favorite part of our trip has to be the hikes we did in El Teide. The nature there was unbelievable. The reason we love traveling so much is this. You are surrounded by pure mother nature. No people, no work stress, no life problems, it all disappears. You feel alive, happy, and one with this planet.

There are a lot of hiking trails here! I recommend you do good research online to find the one best fitting your needs and physique.

Very important! Please PLEASE guys use your sunscreen. I know some of you don't do that but really don't risk ruining your skin and regretting it when you are older. You are on very high altitude here. So the sun radiation is much higher up here. I recommend also bringing a hat and a thin long sleeve shirt so you can cover up if you feel like you might get burned.

5. Other things to visit

  • Playa Arena (western coast) - chill vibes, not very crowded, but also not very impressive
  • Playa Abama (western coast) - very still water, fun snorkeling. We saw very big fish and lots of crabs here. The walk to it is kind of cool, you walk by a very aesthetically pleasing hotel/resort, and you need to take some stairs down to reach the beach.
  • Playa Amarilla (south-western coast) - beautiful formation of the rocks, beautiful landscape for a small walk up a hill to have a stunning view. Water is super clear, but there were lots of waves so not good for swimming or snorkeling on that day. Also it's not really a beach, you will have to sit on rocks.
  • La Tejita Beach (south-western coast) - Beautiful beach that is super long and lots of space. However, it was very windy on the day we visited that we could not really enjoy it that much. The wind was turning the beach into a sandstorm that felt like 10.000 needles on the skin.

We also visited Playa el DuqueLas Americas, and de Las Teresitas but we did not have great weather those days which I think might have impacted our vision on the beaches. It was not looking very appealing. Also those are very touristy beaches, which is not really our thing. The same goes for the big cities Puerto de la Cruz  and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. We just did not vibe with the big touristy crowd.
